cpc-tableVault.com recently posted an article debunking several common Career Services myths.

We deal with many of the same preconceived notions on our own campus. Here are a few myths the article calls out that we hear often:

Career Planning only helps students interested in finance.
It may seem that way because finance recruiters are the most visible on campus in the fall.  This industry recruits early in the school year  because they have predictable hiring needs and budgets. They know they will hire X analysts to work at their companies after graduation. Other industries have different hiring cycles, based on when they have information on their budgets for the coming year, or when they have a better grasp on their hiring needs. Some industries aren’t predictable, and recruit when a position opens, not in advance.

Career Planning is only for Seniors
Totally not true! Exploring career interests and finding internships is a big part of what we work on with students.

Career Services only helps students who know what they want to do with their lives
See above. Career Exploration is something we want to help you with! Make an appointment to chat with someone, regardless of whether or not you’ve got it all figured out. Advisors can suggest resources to help you explore various interests, as well as offer advice on how to be productive even if you don’t know exactly what your future holds.
