What are you doing this summer? The question is much more casual when you are a rising Sophomore than when you are a rising Senior and the summer between your Junior and Senior year becomes much more vital to how it plays in to your job search for life after Bowdoin. As a first year, though, you can pretty much do whatever you’d like. Think about it… you have three summers as a Bowdoin student. Whatever you do after your junior and sophomore year will take precedence on your resume over what you do after your first year. This one is a gimmie!

Therefore, it is my astute advice to check out these unique opportunities available to first year students in eBEAR. Think of this as your “EXPLORE” summer. Do something different… do something unexpected. All experiences help you discover and build skills. See how you like it!

Take a hike: Friends of Acadia are looking for a ridge runner and recreation technician. You are essentially paid to hike around Acadia National Park on Mt Desert Island in Maine, and talk with visitors, educating them about the park, “leave no trace” visiting, mapping trails and doing other research around the park. If you are an outdoor adventurer, and know CPR, this may be a great way to spend your summer. Housing can be provided, too! Check it out in eBEAR. Deadline is Feb 9th.

The sky is the limit: Your career will really take off working right here in Brunswick during the summer at FlightLevel Aviation. They are looking for someone to spend their summers assisting with all things related to aviation management, including plane maintenance, logging, customer service, towing and marshaling aircrafts. You’ll get both the “air side” and “business side” experience. Build the foundation of your management, marketing and finance skills working in a unique business: aviation. Apply early for best consideration.

Plunge in: The Gulf of Maine Research Institute has a few research/biology/environment opportunities currently in eBEAR. Work on researching regional climate change and impact on marine life, sample specimens, investigate shellfish research and work in the Sustainable Seafood Program, which has a direct impact on the Maine economy. Deadline is on Feb 12th. Apply in eBEAR.

Opportunities on land, in the air and at sea. Take advantage of doing something different with your summer! These opportunities are currently in eBEAR. Also, a good idea in general is to spend your summer in Maine. Next week, on February 13th, we are having the Maine Employers Career Fair in Smith Union. See the various internship opportunities available currently in eBEAR (search MECF). The range of employers is pretty great: Companies big and small, research labs to political campaigns, established companies and startups, government and private sector. We got ‘em all!
